Walkthrough and PoC for CVE-2014-1767: AFD.sys dangling pointer (MS14-040) - Windows 7, 64bit

This is the follow up to my 32 bit write up , but this time on Windows 7 x64.  I will highlight the differences, mainly offsets, between the 32 bit and 64 bit.

Environment
OS: Windows 7 x64
afd.sys: 6.1.7601.17514
ntdll.dll: 6.1.7601.17514

Following the steps as before:
  1. Trigger IOCTL 1207F (afdTransmitFile) - creates the Tpinfo Structure and frees the MDL structure
  2. Use ntCreateWorkerFactory to create a WorkerFactory Object to fill the freed MDL structure above
  3. Trigger IOCTL 120C3 (afdTransmitPackets) - frees the WorkerFactory Object created in step 2
  4. Use ntQueryEaFile to fill the freed WorkerFactory Object space with a user controlled object, allowing for a write-what-where exploit
  5. Use NtSetInformationWorkerFactory to overwrite any memory location using the handle to the Worker Factory
  6. Call NtQueryIntervalProfile jumping to shellcode in userland

1. Trigger IOCTL 1207F (afdTransmitFile)

Buffer sent to IOCTL 1207F
For 64 bit - size is 0x40
For 32 bit - size is 0x30

Virtual Address: 0x13371337
Length: 0x18cca

This creates the TPINFO structure. From Siberas' write-up, page 7 in the pdf,
TpInfo+0x40 contains a pointer to Array of TpInfoElement structures
ffffffa8019614150 (TpInfo) + 0x40 = ffffffa8019614250 (Pointer to TpInfoElement)

TpInfoElement+0x10 contains a Pointer to MDL Structure
ffffffa8019614250 (TpInfoElement) + 0x10 = ffffffa801aed2010 (MDL Structure)

ffffffa801aed2010 <==  This address is where all the action happens.

After IOCTL 1207F (afdTransmitFile) returns, the MDL Structure at ffffffa801aed2010 has been freed

2. Use ntCreateWorkerFactory to create a WorkerFactory Object to fill the freed MDL Structure

After CreateWorkerFactory finishing, checking ffffffa801aed2010 shows that it has been filled correctly with Worker Factory Object

3. Trigger IOCTL 120C3 (afdTransmitPackets)

Buffer sent to IOCTL 120C3
For 64 bit - size is 0x18
For 32 bit - size is 0x10

0x2008 = TpInfoElementCount

After the call to IOCTL 120C3 (afdTransmitPackets) returns, the worker factory object has been freed at ffffffa801aed2010

4. Use NTQueryEaFile to fill the freed WorkerFactory Object space with a user controlled object

The memory layout used to fill the user controlled object.  Key location is 0x2150 this contains a pointer to a structure to determine the address to write to.
0x2200 + 0x18, contains the address to write to - 0x2C.  I will detail this in step 5.

After NTQueryEAFile completes, the user controlled object has been placed in the location ffffffa801aed2010, which still has a valid workerfactory handle available

.

5. Use NtSetInformationWorkerFactory to overwrite any memory location using the handle to the Worker Factory

For the 64 bit exploit, I had to use three calls to NtSetInformationWorkerFactory to correctly overwrite halQuerySystemInformation in the HalDispatchTable.  NtSetInformationWorkerFactory only allows for write 32 bits at a time.

In the highlighted instruction, this is the reason for subtracting 0x2c from the address.  The code adds 0x2c to the address in the rdx register.

In addition, to the 32 bit limitation, if you try to write 0x0, NtSetInformationWorkerFactory has a check that if the value is 0x0 a call will be made to nt!KeNumberProcessors to determine the value written.

I use three writes to place a userland address in location.
at 0x2500: Write Part 1
at 0x2508: Write Part 2

First write where

ffffff80002c09c3c + 2c = ffffff80002c09c68
Part 1 (0x2510)

Second Write where

ffffff80002c09c40 + 2c = ffffff80002c09c6c
Write Part 2 (0x25)

Third Write where

ffffff80002c09c3d + 2c = ffffff80002c09c69
Write Part 2 (0x25)

6. Call NtQueryIntervalProfile jumping to shellcode in userland

  • Phase 1: Restores nt!HalDispatchTable to the known good states. Updates HalDispatchTable+0x8 with the correct value for HaliQuerySystemInformation
  • Phase 2: TokenStealingUpdates with the current python process' token with the token from the SYSTEM process
  • Phase 3: Fixes the Object Table for the python process, preventing the system from BSOD when exiting the elevated cmd shell.  It nulls out the handle to the WorkerFactory object which was freed in step 3, and reduces the HandleCount by 1.

To fix the Object Table:
By using the handle value for the WorkerFactory (0x17c), it is possible to null out the value.
By using the !process command, it is possible to find the pointer to the object table (0xffffff8002b12ae0) = fffff8a001695000

fffff8a001695000 + 0x17c * 4 = fffff8a0016955f0

 Final Shellcode at 0x2510
